Bill Harris was born in 1933.

Career

Bill Harris worked for twenty years at The New York Times before he started his second life as a freelance writer in 1979. Since then he has provided the text for a number of photography collections that explore a particular locale in detail. Harris contributed the text for New York at Night, a book that includes black and white and color photos - collected from more than forty photographers - that capture events in the city from the second half of the twentieth century. The collection New York: An Anthology, compiled by Harris and Mike Marqusee, includes over one hundred prose and poetry contributions that capture New York City in all its maddening and exhilarating variety. Harris also contributed to Washington D.C., a photographic guide with captions and text that feature the monuments of the city. During his life he prepared about 15 city guides.

Achievements

• Harris is known as the author of picturesque city guides. His best known work is New York at Night, which was published in 1984.
