Mason won silver in a coxless four at the 1968 World Junior Championships and was part of an eight in 1974 that won Great Britain’s first sweep medal at a senior world championships. He won at Henley Royal Regatta three times as an athlete and has coached an estimated 20 crews to victory at Henley Royal Regatta including Thames Tradesmen"s Remote Control, Imperial College British Columbia and Westminster School British Columbia, plus various composite crews. He also coached the first Great Britain women's sweep crew to win a world title, in 1993, and was chief coach for Great Britain women at the 1996 Olympics.
