He became a student of Kala-Bhavan, the art faculty of Visva-Bharati University in 1919. Indian artist Nandlal Bose and a close companion of Ramkinkar Baij- the celebrated sculptor, both were his mentors.
He joined Kala Bhavan in 1925 as the teaching faculty. His inspiration rose painters like K.G. Subramanyan, Jahar Dasgupta and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha. He also mentored the filmmaker Satyajit Ray, printmaker and sculpture Somnath Hore and designer Riten Majumdar. He learnt more under the guidance of Toba Sojo, a Japanese artist during 1937-1938. He left Kala Bhavan in 1949 and became a curator at the Nepal Government Museum in Kathmandu.
