(THE POETRY OF SAPPHO.--If all the poets and all the lover...)
THE POETRY OF SAPPHO.--If all the poets and all the lovers of poetry should be asked to name the most precious of the priceless things which time has wrung in tribute from the triumphs of human genius, the answer which would rush to every tongue would be "The Lost Poems of Sappho."

(Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry Is the future of poe...)
Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry Is the future of poetry, as Matthew Arnold prophesied, immense For the answer to this very important question, we must turn to the past, - to man, his nature and his needs as there recorded. If the past answers that poetry has been of immense influence upon the life of man, we are warranted by the stability of the forces operative about us and within us, in asserting that poetry will continue to be of immense influence; indeed, we cannot, with any show of reason, come to a contrary conclusion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in our edition. We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.

Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Whilst the books in this collection have not been hand curated, an aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature. As a result of this book being first published many decades ago, it may have occasional imperfections. These imperfections may include poor picture quality, blurred or missing text. While some of these imperfections may have appeared in the original work, others may have resulted from the scanning process that has been applied. However, our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. While some publishers have applied optical character recognition (OCR), this approach has its own drawbacks, which include formatting errors, misspelt words, or the presence of inappropriate characters. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with an experience that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic book, and that the occasional imperfection that it might contain will not detract from the experience.

Mr. Carman was born on April 15, 1861, in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. He was a son of William and Sophia Mary (Bliss) Carman.
Bliss Carman studied at Fredericton Collegiate School during 1872-1878. He graduated from University of New Brunswick, receiving Bachelor of Arts in 1881 and Master of Arts in 1884. He attended University of Edinburgh from 1882 to 1883 and Harvard University in 1886-1888.
From 1883 to 1884 Mr. Carman worked as a teacher at Fredericton Collegiate School. He studied law with the firm of James Douglas Hazen, Fredericton, 1884-1886. He was a private tutor since 1885. Between 1890 and 1892 Bliss Carman was appointed literary editor for New York Independent. In 1892 he became a staff member of Current Literature. Mr. Carman was a staff member of Cosmopolitan-New York in 1894. The following year he became a staff member of Atlantic Monthly, Boston.
During the period of 1895-1900 Bliss Carman workd as a columnist at Boston Transcript. Then he became a reader at Small, Maynard and Company, Publishers, Boston, 1897-1903. In 1905 he served as an editor for Literary World, Boston. In 1909 Mr. Carman became a staff member of Gentleman’s Journal.
Between 1909 and 1919 Mr. Carman worked as a part-time advertising writer.
His first published poem was in the UNB Monthly in 1879. Songs of Vagabondia, the first Hovey-Carman collaboration, was published by Copeland & Day in 1894. It was an immediate success (Richard Hovey was an American poet and a university friend of Mr. Carman). In 1896 Bliss Carman met Mary Perry King, who became the greatest and longest-lasting female influence in his life.
Between 1908 and 1920, literary taste began to shift, and his fortunes and health declined. Although not a political activist, Mr. Carman during the First World War was a member of the Vigilantes, who supported American entry into the conflict on the Allied side.
By 1920, Bliss Carman was impoverished and recovering from a near-fatal attack of tuberculosis. That year he revisited Canada and "began the first of a series of successful and relatively lucrative reading tours, discovering 'there is nothing worth talking of in book sales compared with reading.'" The tours of Canada continued, and by 1925 Mr. Carman had finally acquired a Canadian publisher.
Mr. Carman died of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 68 in New Canaan, and was cremated in New Canaan.

Quotations:
"Set me a task in which I can put something of my very self, and it is a task no longer; it is joy; it is art."
"Indifference may not wreck a man's life at any one turn, but it will destroy him with a kind of dry-rot in the long run."
