After an earlier career as a Medical Laboratory Technician, he was ordained a deacon in 1977 and a priest in 1978. He served curacies at Christ Church, Falkirk and Christ Church, Morningside, Edinburgh. He was a Chaplain at the University of Dundee from 1984 to 1990.
The following year, he was elected bishop of the Diocese of Aberdeen and Orkney and consecrated at Street Andrew"s Cathedral, Aberdeen on 23 September 2007.
