Bob Graham is an Australian author who has written many children's picture books including How to Heal a Broken Wing, How the Sun Got to Coco's House, Max, Jethro Byrde: Fairy Child and April Underhill: Tooth Fairy. He has also illustrated some acclaimed books for children.

Background

Bob Graham was born on October 20, 1942, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He is the son of Donald and Kathleen (King) Graham. He lived with mother, father, his older sister, his grandmother and a cat called Smokey.

Education

Bob Graham studied at school but left it in his teens and worked at Qantas for four years. He continued painting and drawing. Graham always had an affinity for illustrations in books and comics. He loved drawing but never really studied art at school. Then he enrolled at the Julian Ashton Art School, where he developed his talent and met his wife.

Career

After graduation, Bob Graham began his career as an illustrator and designer. While working in pubs and clubs, Graham took the position of an artist at New South Wales Government printers from 1973 till 1975. He later worked as a resource designer for the Department of Technical and Further Education in Sydney, and the Australian National University in Canberra.

The first book he wrote and illustrated was about his son and a budgie which briefly flew into their lives. The book was called Pete and Roland and was published in 1981. In 1982 he illustrated the music and lyrics booklet for Australian Broadcasting Commission's Sing primary school music radio broadcast. Since this time, Graham has been a freelance artist, illustrating many of his own books for children as well as educational materials and a popular six-page monthly comic strip in the French magazine Les Belles Histoires.

Nowadays, Bob Graham continues publishing new books.

  • Bob Graham's books were translated into several languages. They were also nominated for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards, for the Prime Minister's Literary Awards and for Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year Award in various categories.
