He attended Upsala College, a Division III school, for one academic year (1982-1983) and then transferred to Division I Morehead State University, where he played 3 seasons (from 1984 to 1987. After having dropped the 1983-1984 season as a transfer student).
He was listed as a power forward at 6"7" (or 6"6") and 244–248 lbs. McCann died in July 2011. He was selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 1987 National Basketball Association Draft, and played in the National Basketball Association intermittently for five seasons (from 1989-1990 until 1997-1998) with five different teams (Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, Washington Bullets and Toronto Raptors), averaging 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
He played as well in the USBL and College of Business Administration leagues in the country, and abroad in Spain, France, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Argentina.
