Yoo received the Master of Science degree in 1985 and Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1991 in inorganic chemistry from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.
Yoo began his career as a researcher at Korea Institute of Science and Technology in 1985. He held the position of a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. Since 1998, he has been a principal investigator at Korea Institute of Science and Technology.
Yoo served as editor for Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry in 1997-2013 and had served as an editor-in-chief in 2014-2015.
Yoo was the president of the Korean Silicon Society from 2014 to 2015. He was a member of Korean Chemistry Society.
On February 14, 1987 Bok Yoo married Sung Mi Kim. They have 2 children.
