1902 graduate Military Medical Academy.
After graduation worked for V.M. Bekhterev. 1904-1905 served in Russo-Japanese War. 1906 sent to Germany, where he worked at neurological clinics and studied the normal and pathological histology of the nervous system.
1911 published major work on the normal and pathological histology of the peripheral nerves and the histology of neuritis, in which he devoted particular attention to regeneration and which received international acclaim. From 1917 until death worked at Clinic of Nervous Diseases, Military Medical Academy. 1926 founded laboratory for the study of the histology of the nervous system, Leningrad Institute of Surgical Neuropathology (now Polenov Neurosurgical Institute).
1932-1948 founderhead laboratory of normal and pathological morphology of the nervous system, Institute of Experimental Medical 1936-1948 after death of predecessor M. 1. Astvatsaturov, head, Chair of Nervous Diseases, Military Medical Academy: during 1939-1940 Soviet-Finnish War established neurosurgical department at his clinic.
As a clinical neuropathologist continued the tradition of Bekhterev, Zhukovskiy and Astvatsaturov. As a neuropathologist he was an adherent of ’’total” research on the nervous system. Studied the nervous system during infectious diseases (diphtheria, rabies, scarlet fever, typhoid) and intoxication.
A number of his pupils now head chairs of nervous diseases and neuropathological laboratories.
