From 1900 worked at Saint St. Petersburg Botanical Gardens (later Botanical Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1918-1931 professor, Geographical Institute, then Leningrad University. 1908-1917 led various botanical expeditions to Centr Russia, Urals, Far East, Caucasus, Centr Asia, Asia Minor, Western Europe and Algeria.
Wrote numerous works on plant geography and taxonomy. 1912-1920 and 1923-1924 ed, series Flora Aziatskoy Rossii. 1929-1941 ed, series Flora 7.abaykal'ya 1929-1941 ed, series Flora Yugo-Vostoka Yevropeyskoy chasti Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.
