1892-1895 studied at Medical Faculty, then Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Moscow University but was expelled for revol activity and exiled from Moscow. 1902 graduate Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Kazan’ University.
1902-1910 assistant professor, from 1910 associate professor, Kazan’ University. 1913-1931 professor of botany, Voronezh Agric Institute. 1919-1931 also professor of botany, Medical Faculty and Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, Voronezh University.
1931-1937 director Botanical Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, Leningrad. Foreign a lime also director, Soil Institute, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1937-1945 director, Moscow Botanical Garden, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
1941-1945 also ehm, Turkmen Branch, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences, Ashkhabad. 1908-1936 made numerous botanical field trips and expeditions, inter alia to the Volga basin, the Gornyy Altay, the steppes of Kazakhstan, Sweden and Norway. Devised new methods for research on the interrelationship of plants and their environment (ecological scries method).
Introduced ’’semi-desert” concept. Developed principles of differentiating steppe and semi-steppe vegetation. Studied evolution from the viewpoint of ecology and physiology, giving special consideration to the universal role of vegetation, the question of the individual plant and hereditary changes of plants under the influence of their environment.
Wrote over 300 works and gave his name to several plant varieties.
