Graduated Kiev University. Studied Slavonic languages, Sanskrit, Iranian, the Romance and Baltic languages at St. Petersburg University.
Professor, Leningrad University. Did research on the Russian language and its history, including dialectology, lexicology, phraseology, stylistics and grammar. Also did research on Indian philology.
1934-1949 supervised the compilation of material for a dictionary of ancient Russian. Also collected material for a bibliography of the Russian language from 1860 through 1940.
