Did research on the peripheral nervous system. Made first extensive use of the experimental morphological method involving neurotomy. Studied nerve degeneration and regeneration by the silver impregnation method.
Did research on the interconnection of the vegetative nerves and their relation to the innervate tissues and organs. Contributed to an important in vivo study of synapses. Introduced new concepts in the theory of neurohistology and contributed to the theory of the neuronic structure of nervous tissue.
Correspondent member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1939.
