Education
1885 graduate Faculty of History and Philology, Saint St. Petersburg University.
Career
1897-1899 lecturer. Khar’kov University. 1899-1923 professor, Novorossiysk University, Odessa. From 1924 worked for Institute of Language and Thought and Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences in Leningrad.
Did research on the history of the Russian language and its dialects, Old Slavonic, comparative Slavic grammar and Slavic etymology.
Membership
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences from 1923. Member, Polish Academy of Sciences from 1930. Correspondent member, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences from 1932.
Correspondent member, Czechoslovakian Academy of Sciences from 1934.
