1919-1925 lecturer, from 1925 professor, Moscow Higher Technical College. 1920-1949 also founder-head, Chair of Experimental Aerodynamics, Zhukovskiy Air Force Engineer Academy and Moscow Aviation Institute. Helped found Centr Aerohydrodynamic Institute, Moscow Aviation Institute and Air Force Engineer Academy.
Supervised design and construction of aerodynamic laboratories at these establishments. 1944-1950 chairman, Commission for the History of Engineer, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. From 1950 at Institute of Mechanical, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
1910-1911, together with Sabinin, developed airscrew theory. Did research on theory and design of helicopters. From 1925 supervised preliminary experiments and helped design EA-1 helicopter, built at Centr Aerohydrodynamic Institute.
1941, together with I. P. Brakhutin, designed twin-screw “Omega” helicopter. Helped standardize aerodynamic terminology. Helped publish manual for aircraft designers.
