In 1906 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of Moscow State University.
In 1906-1918 Boris was the teacher of geography in the schools of Moscow, simultaneously he participated in the Murmansk expedition of the hydrographic department at the Naval Ministry, and also in the Olonets expedition to study the lakes of Petrozavodsk and Povenets Uyezds. In 1919-1930 Ditmar was the Professor of Meteorology at the Tver Institute of Public Education. In 1930-1934 he worked as Professor at the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute. Since 1934 Boris was the head of the Physical Geography Department at the Voronezh State Pedagogical Institute, since 1935 he was the professor of the geographical faculty at the Voronezh State University.
Ditmar carried out geomorphological investigations in the Central Chernozem Region. He was the Professor of State Pedagogical Institutes: since 1939 in the Crimea, since 1942 in Dagestan (Makhachkala city), since 1943 in Yaroslavl.
