He received a Bachelor of Surgery in history from Utah State University. Bachelor of Arts and Licentiate degrees in philosophy from the Higher Institute of Philosophy of the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. An Master of Arts in history from Princeton University.
Prior to taking his position at Notre Dame, he was a Junior Fellow in the Harvard Society of Fellows and an Assistant Professor of History at Stanford University.

Wilson Prize as the best first book published by the Harvard University Press and the California Book Award Silver Medal for Nonfiction. In 2012 he wrote the widely acclaimed book The Unintended Reformation.
