Carter attended Texas Technical University, where he played for the Texas Technical Red Raiders football team from 2006 to 2009.
Carter played college football for Texas Technical University and received All-American honors. After his college career, he was signed by the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2010. At Spring Hill High School in Longview, Texas, he played nose guard and defensive tackle until his senior season, when he broke his hand, causing him to play offensive line.
In the 2008 regular season, he allowed only one sack.
In 2009, Carter was listed at Number. 15 on Rivals.com′s preseason offensive tackle power ranking.
On September 27, 2009, Carter was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules. He was reinstated on October 4, after missing only a single game.
