Career
Hughes turned pro in 2003, joining the Austin Ice Bats of the Central Hockey League (CHL). In 2007, Hughes moved to the new International Hockey League (formerly the United Hockey League), signing with the Portuguese Huron Icehawks. In 2008, Hughes moved to the United Kingdom"s Elite Ice Hockey League, signing with the Basingstoke Bison.
On 29 January 2010 Hughes signed for the Newcastle Vipers.
Hughes went on to sign for then new Elite League team Dundee Stars for the 2010-2011 season, where he was appointed assistant Coach. In the 2011-2012 season, he was promoted to Head Coach when Dan Ceman was fired.
