Career
He appeared on the television Show Gomer Pyle United States Marine Corps as PFC Brian Jones in the October 13, 1967 episode entitled "The Great Talent Hunt". to represent the United States Marine Corps as a Singer. As an actor, he is known for playing Carl Smith, who attempts to marry Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross) in the 1967 film The Graduate. He also appeared in the 1973 Woody Allen film Sleeper.
Avery has also worked as an executive producer.
He is the father of the musician Eric Avery who is the former bass player with the rock band Jane"s Addiction.
