(A BULLETIN REVIEW of the first book of the Promises of Dr...)
A BULLETIN REVIEW of the first book of the Promises of Dr. Sigmundus: The Hollow People proclaimed: “Brian Keaney’s concoction of science fiction, horror, and fantasy is remarkably effective” and “Sigmundus is a worthy and memorable villain that will haunt readers. As the first in a series, this is a promising start, and the cliffhanger ending all but guarantees return readers.” The Cracked Mirror continues its chronicle of a moody, fantastical world in which its teenage hero and heroine must endure more risk, make riskier choices, and sacrifice their very lives in the cause of freedom and self determination. This haunting installment keeps the pages turning, setting the stage for the ultimate showdown, a battle between good and evil coming in fall 2009.

“Keaney's concoction of sci-fi, horror, and fantasy is remarkably effective. Sigmundus is a villain who will haunt readers.”—The Bulletin Beginning where Book 2, The Cracked Mirror, left off, this finale to the Promises of Dr. Sigmundus trilogy takes readers into bizarre realms with fanciful creatures, continuing its signature exploration of the price of freedom and self-determination. Focusing on the ongoing struggles of its teenaged protagonists, Dante and Bea, it is a journey at once thrilling and thoughtful, with plenty to offer for pure reading enjoyment and book discussion. This trilogy is satisfying for fantasy fans but also accessible to the less-than-hardcore genre enthusiast.

ENGLISH IN THE SCHOOL GROUNDS teaching Ages 5-11. The best writing is born out of observation and experience. Surprisingly, this well-known truth is not always acted upon in schools. For example, field trips, which are commonplace in other subjects, are relatively unknown in English. The premise of this book is that the school grounds provide a largely unexploited opportunity for just such field trips. School grounds are a territory where the imagination can engage with reality... for the grounds of the school are its wildlife park, where insects and animals carry on their discreet negotiations with humanity. It is in the school grounds that the seasons leave their unmistakable signature and it is here too that children create their most uninhibited dramas. This book provides inspiration for a series of activities in story-telling, poetry-writing, drama and language work. There are also chapters based on Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing.
