Career
University College Dublin
After spending his entire schoolboy days with Cherry Orchard, Shortall began his senior career with University College Dublin in 2004 on a sports scholarship. Following University College Dublin"s relegation from the Premier Division in 2008, Shortall and University College Dublin made an instant return to the top flight by winning the 2009 First Division title. Shortall was named in the PFAI"s First Division Team of the Year for that season.
Saint Patrick"s Athletic
Following a final season with University College Dublin for the 2010 Premier Division campaign, Shortall departed University College Dublin after 7 seasons to join Saint Patrick"s Athletic who were under the management of his former University College Dublin boss Pete Mahon.
His versatility playing anywhere across the defence saw Shortall make 41 appearances in all competitions including starting in all 6 of Saint Patrick"s Athletic"s Union of European Football Associations Europa League matches. Shortall was one of 19 Saint Patrick"s Athletic players who departed the club after the 2011 season.
Shelbourne
Shortall joined newly promoted Premier Division club Shelbourne on 3 January 2012 for the 2012 campaign.
