In 1962, Brian Tennyson received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Arts in 1963. He also received a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1978.
Brian Tennyson has taught in the Department of History at Cape Breton University for many years and since 2003 has been Emeritus Professor there. He also served as founding director of the university's Centre for International Studies.
A specialist in early twentieth-century Canadian political history, Tennyson has written or edited seventeen books and more than forty scholarly papers in various professional journals, on Ontario provincial politics during the First World War, Canadian-South African relations, Gambian development issues, Cape Breton and Confederation, and, in recent years, Canadian involvement in the First World War.
A well-known author, historian and retired Cape Breton University Professor Brian Tennyson, has been recognized for his work on Nova Scotia's contributions to the Great War. He was one of 13 Atlantic Book Award recipients.
Brian Tennyson received the President's Common Purposes Award in 2000, the Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award (2003), the International Leadership Award of the Canadian Bureau of International Education (2003), and was listed in Who's Who in Canada.

Brian Tennyson is a member of the Canadian Historical Association, Canadian Institute of International Affairs, and Phi Beta Delta. A founder and twice president of the Old Sydney Society, Tennyson has also served on the Board of Trustees of the Nova Scotia Archives, the board of directors of the Association of Nova Scotia Museums, and the board of directors of the Canadian Bureau for International Education. He also served for nine years on the Bridgewater Museum Commission, five of them as chairman, and continues to serve on the town's Heritage Advisory Committee.
Tennyson has a passion for history, especially local history and Nova Scotia's contributions to the war effort and has penned a number of books over the years.
Tennyson was married to Beverly Keoug. When their marriage ended, Brian married Sandra Atwell on September 4, 1993. Tennyson has two children: Christopher and Lindsay.
