SubLieut. 1875; Sandhurst, 1875-1876. 2nd Battalion Suffolk Regiment, 1876. Appointed to Stall Corps and proceeded to India, 1876.
Served with 1st Madras Infantry 1876-1883, and with it took part in Afghan War, 1879-1880 (medal). With Madras Pioneers, 1883-1885. Through Burmese Campaign and subsequent annexation to end of operations (despatches, medal).
Raised and commanded a military Police Battalion, 1887-1892 (clasp). Commanded a company of mounted infantry during the rebellion of the Wuntho State, 1891 (despatches, clasp, and Companion of the Distinguished Service Order). Rebellion of Northern Chin Hills, 1892-1893 (despatches, Brevet majority).
China, 1901 (despatches). Lieutenant, 1877; Captain, 1888. Major, 1897; Lieutenant - Colonel, 1903.
Colonel, 1906; Aide-de-camp to His (or Her) Majesty the King, 1907. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; commanding 2nd Infantry Brigade, Secunderabad.
