She attended a drama school Calle Flygare Teaterskola in Stockholm and then joined a traveling theater group.
Britt entered films thanks to her beautiful looks and became a star in Italy. Ekland's rise to international fame began while she was making a film in Rome in 1963. When she was sitting in a side walk cafe sipping a cappuccino with an American friend, she was approached by a stranger who, struck by her extraordinary beauty, asked her if she'd like to meet the then head of 20th Century Fox, Daryl F. Zanuck. So, she felt that there was an opportunity to become a celebrity in the US. Britt was signed to a contract and sent off to drama school to sharpen her acting skills and to prepare for the English speaking market. Ekland even gave up her career to focus on the relationship, because her private life was full of men.Britt also started a well-known affair with a rock star Rod Stewart; they were introduced in 1975 by Joan Collins and lived together for over two years. In 1979-1981 she dated and got engaged to the Girl frontman and future L.A. Guns singer Phil Lewis. Then she was married with Slim Jim Phantom. Ekland is still a regular fixture on the rock'n'roll social scene due to her acquaintance with the Osbournes.
Britt still actively participates in various projects. Among them are a live stage appearance in Grumpy Old Women and reality TV.
In 2004 Ekland was portrayed by Charlize Theron in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers. Theron invited Britt to accompany her at the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival, where she became highly emotional when she saw the film.
