What qualities are needed for success in the library profession? Are these qualities similar to those of corporate leaders? This book, based on "Leaders: The Strategies for Taking Chage" by Bennis and Nanus, aims to present a major step toward understanding why and how some librarians move easily into leadership roles. The leadership characteristics of librarians are examined and compared with those of corporate and public sector leaders. The concepts of visionary leadership, communication skills, the value of consistency, importance of self-confidence, and the crucial role of mentors and networking in career building are explored. Intended for those who want to enhance their leadership skills and for those who educate our future leaders, the author uses real life examples of success stories and other critical incidents gleaned from diverse careers of 60 leaders in librarians. Sheldon takes an upbeat approach to understanding and developing leadership at all levels of an organization by identifying leadership characteristics and showing how to apply them in the workplace.
