Bruce received Bachelor of Arts at Oberlin College in 1980, then he earned Master of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1982. Finally, he got Doctor of Philosophy at University of Virginia in 1993.
Since 1992 Bruce works as an associate professor of English in Western Washington University in Bellingham, Washington, United States. Since 1988 he also works as a poet. His work also appears in The Pushcart Book of Poetry: The Best Poems from the First Thirty Years of the Pushcart Prize, as well as other anthologies including Lyric Postmodernisms: An Anthology of Contemporary Innovative Poetries; Under 35: The New Generation of American Poets; Under the Rock Umbrella: Contemporary Poets from 1951-1977; and American Alphabets: 25 Contemporary Poets. His poems appear widely in such journals as The Kenyon Review, Southern Review, New American Writing, Field, New England Review, and Yale Review.
On September 7, 1992, Bruce married Suzanne Paola, with whom he has a child Jin.
