West received a BA in Philosophy in 1975 and an MFA in Photography in 1978, both from Pennsylvania State University, University Park.
Since 1979 he has been a resident artist in the Artist-in-the-Schools Program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and an instructor of photography at the Pennsylvania State University's Continuing Education Program. He also worked as a freelance industrial photographer in 1978- 79.
His photographs are included in numerous public and corporate collections such as The Library of Congress, Saint Louis Art Museum, The Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum Ludwig, and the Paine Webber Corporation. Recent exhibitions include Acts of Faith at The Noorderlicht Photofestival in Groningen, The Netherlands; Contemporary American Photography at the Internationale Fototage in Mannheim, Germany; and Recent Acquisitions in Photography at The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.
