An early interest in agriculture’s role in the economic development of Japan and Taiwan led to more general analysis of agriculture’s role in economic development. More recent work has combined a concern with agricultural strategies with a focus on rural development, with emphasis on interrelated health, nutrition, and family planning programmes that directly increase human welfare, enhance the effectiveness of a country’s labour force, and slow its rate of growth. An extended period of concentration on the food and agriculture problems of tropical Africa was followed by research with Peter Kilby on agriculture and structural transformation in Taiwan, India and Pakistan and by study of agriculture and rural development in Mexico.
