Bruno was born at Cologne about the year 1030. According to tradition, he belonged to the family of Hartenfaust, or Hardebüst, one of the principal families of the city.

Bruno was ordained in 1057. His early years as a priest were given to teaching and administration.
The Carthusian order was founded in 1084, when Bruno retired with six companions to the mountainous Grande Chartreuse region in southeastern France.
After six years Pope Urban II called him to Rome for consultation.
Later Bruno establishd two monasteries in Calabria, including the famous La Torre monastery.
He wrote commentaries on the Psalms and the Pauline Epistles.
His feast is October 6.
