Studied at Dulwich College. King’s College School, Somerset House, London.
Career
Served as trooper in original Pioneer Force which annexed Rhodesia to the British Empire, 1889-1891. Surveyor in De Beers Consolidated Mines, Ltd., Kimberley. Served in South African War, 1899-1901, in Kimberley Town Guard.
Intell. Officer for Griqualand West, as far as Mafeking. S.O.I. to Vryburg and Carnarvon Columns. Press Censor and Interpreter and Intelligence Officer at Oudtshoom, under Acting Inspector-General Western (despatches four times).
Government Surveyor Cape and Transvaal Colonies, practising at Johannesburg. Decorated for Siege of Kimberley. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; Kimberley Town Guard; transferred to Intelligence Department 1900.
