Bunroku Shishi a pen name for Toyoo Iwata was born on July 1, 1893 in Yokohama, Aomori, Japan.
Attended Keio University. In 1922 he traveled to France to study modern French theater, and worked in the atelier of Jacques Copeau.
Bunroku Shishi wrote humorous novels of contemporary life including Konjiki Seishunfu (A Song of the Golden Days of Youth, 1934), Yuran Ressha (Excursion Train) and Jiyu Gakko (The School of Freedom) which was carried serially in the Asahi Shimbun (newspaper) was one of the most read novels in postwar Japan. Also wrote Tenya Wanya (Topsy-Turvy) and Yassa Mossa (Hurly-Burly) which were well received.
