Buntaro Nishino went to Tokyo and was employed in the Home Ministry. At the time rumors were circulating that Arinori Mori, Education Minister, when he visited the Ise Grand Shrines, entered the shrine building without removing his shoes and lifted the sacred bamboo curtain with his cane. Believing Mori guilty of such blasphemous acts, he proceeded to the residence of Mori and killed him with a dagger, just when the Education Minister was leaving his residence for ceremonies of promulgation of the Constitution.
Buntaro Nishino himself was killed on the spot by one of Mari's guards. It was suspected that Nishino was instigated to the assassination by some Shinto circles who were indignant over Mari's Westernized ways.
