(Jimmy Joste was a powerhouse in the oil and gas industry,...)
Jimmy Joste was a powerhouse in the oil and gas industry, but he was a weakling when it came to his gorgeous, athletic, longtime lover, Rhonda Glover. Addicted to her sexual prowess and madly in love, Joste gave her homes, cars, cash, and a 350,000 engagement ring. Their 15 years of passion and excess ended the day Rhonda drove directly from a shooting range to the Austin home they once shared. After pumping 10 bullets into him from a Glock 9mm, she stood over Joste's blood-splattered body and shot him six more times, twice below the waist. According to Rhonda, Joste was violent and abusive and threatened her life. Here, for the first time, are Rhonda Glover's shocking stories of drug-crazed devil worship and sexual perversity. But in a packed courtroom, prosecutors presented shocking evidence that beautiful Rhonda didn't act in self-defense - it was hot-blooded murder!

“True crime at its best. … Barer has undeniable talent, pizzaz and imagination!”—Jack Olsen, bestselling author and award-winning journalist. 1982: Oregon businessman Phil Champagne, age 52, dies in a tragic boating accident off Lopez Island. He is survived by one ex-wife, four adult children, an octogenarian mother, and two despondent brothers. Phil didn't know he was dead until he read it in the paper. All things considered, he took it rather well. So did Phil's brother, Mitch, the beneficiary of a 1.5 million dollar policy on Phil's life. 1992: Wastington restauranteur Harold Stegeman, famous for his thick, juicy steaks, is arrested by the Secret Service for printing counterfeit United States currency in an Idaho shed. In addition to the bogus bills, Stegeman also has a fraudulently obtained passport, a fabricated Cayman Island drivers license, and Phil Champagne's fingerprints. When the uproarious reality of Harold Stegeman's secret identity hit the headlines, the counterfeit resurrection of Phil Champagne became one of the most celebrated and hysterically funny true-crime stories of the twentieth century. And while every supermarket tabloid and television talk show hounded after the untold story, only Edgar Award winner Burl Barer captured Champagne's confidence and received permission to detail Phil's post-mortem career of fraud, deception, trickery, lies, and fine prime rib, bringing to life the exploits of a man his family thought dead over a decade ago. “Crisp as a freshly printed C-note. Exceptionally clever and vastly entertaining!”—Lee Goldberg, author, screenwriter and television producer. “Barer does it again! A deft and dazzling display of solid research and rapier wit—a must for all true crime aficionados.”—Gary C. King, author of To Die For.

literary historian Radio host author
Burl Roger Barer was born on August 8, 1947, in Walla Walla, Washington, District of Columbia, United States. He is the son of David and Dorothy (Copeland) Barer.
Barer attended the University of Washington, in 1969.
Barer, had been well known in his native Seattle area since the early 1970s, when he established his on-air presence at a number of local stations, then parlayed that success into a handful of creative businesses such as Barer/McManus and Barer/Goldblatt & Associates. Before becoming a writer, Barer worked as a radio personality in the Pacific Northwest.
He began to serve as a broadcaster on radio stations in Seattle, including KJR Seattle, two times: from 1967 till 1968, and from 1974 till 1976. He worked on KOL AM & FM Seattle, for 5 years from 1968, as well on the radio station KYYX, from 1978 to 1980. One year later he was appointed to KXA radio station.
Simultaneously he served at the Mind Development, Inc., in Seattle, being a teacher and consultant, for a year from 1973, becoming its vice president in 1978.
At his organization Barer/McManus, in Bellevue, he was a creative director and on-air personality, for 2 years from 1975. Barer became a regional vice president, as well, at the company Merklingar Labs, in Denver, in 1977. At the Barer/Goldblatt & Associates, in Bellevue, he also held the position of president, started in 1978.
In partnership with Terry McManus, Barer wrote and produced national radio commercials for many touring performers, including Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan.
In the 1980s, Barer and Kenneth H. Thompson established a cable television advertising interconnect in Eastern Washington. Barer Cable Advertising, Inc., using a proprietary method of inventory allocation, became the highest grossing interconnect in America, garnering over 1000 X the national average in dollar per subscriber household revenue per month. The markets were later sold to the Multi-System Operators in the various markets.
He became a director of the company B. Barer & Sons, Inc., in 1980, as well as a president of the Barer Cable Advertising 2 years after that.
In the 1980s, as well, Barer, coming to Walla Walla, Washington, cooperated with Thomas D. Hodgins to launch several radio stations, such as Lucky 98, Power 99, and KUJ-FM.
In 2007, Barer regularly participated on the long-running Internet radio program Outlaw Radio hosted by Matt Alan.
In March 2008, Barer teamed with Woldman for their own show, with a focus on crime.
Four years after that, Barer and Don Woldman, previously teamed on Outlaw Radio's True Crime Uncensored, reunited as contributors to various true crime-related specials and discussions on Hart D. Fisher's American Horrors channel.
Barer is a frequent commentator on numerous television programs seen worldwide, including Deadly Women (2011), Snapped (2011), Scorned: Love Kills (2012), Deadly Sins (2013), and Behind Mansion Walls (2013).
In addition, Barer appeared in two episodes of the series Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan together with his dog.
In 2013, Barer served as a consultant to the television pilot series, "The Saint," starring Adam Rayner as Simon Templar.
Concerning his writings, Burl Barer’s 1993 book, The Saint: A Complete History in Print, Radio, Film, and Television of Leslie Charteris' Robin Hood of Modern Crime, Simon Templar, 1928-1992, was “clearly a labor of love,” according to Choice contributor D. Highsmith. His work on the Saint evidently grew from a longtime fascination with mystery stories and with that character in particular. To research his 1993 tome Barer made extensive use of the Charteris Collection at Boston University.
According to columnist Jon L. Breen in the Armchair Detective, the book was notable for its treatment of the business details of the Saint industry, such as contracts and litigations. Barer had solidified his position as a professional writer with the 1994 publication of Maverick: The Making of the Movie and the Official Guide to the Television Series.
Barer is the author of true crime non-fiction books, including Man Overboard: The Counterfeit Resurrection of Phil Champagne. He and his co-writer Frank Girardot worked together on the 2016 true crime tale "A Taste for Murder".
