Burt Chernow was an American artist, educator and writer, who gained acclaim in the art world.

Background

Burt was born on July 28, 1933 in New York, United States. He was the son of Abe and Selma (Schnieder) Chernow.

Education

In 1958 Burt finished New York University and attained Bachelor of Science degree. In 1960 he obtained Master of Arts degree graduating from the same university.

Career

From 1958 till 1960 Burt worked as an art teacher at public schools of Valley Stream, Long Island and New York. Beginning from 1960 till 1966 he served as an art teacher at public schools in Valley Stream, Westport and Connecticut. In 1964 Burt founded permanent art collection Westport Schools. From 1966 to 1985 Chernow held the post of a professor and chairman of art department.

Moreover, he was a director of the Housatonic Museum of Art at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States. In 1967 Burt started to work as a teacher at a museum in Stamford, Connecticut, United States. From 1967 till 1970 he served as a teacher at Museum of Modern Art in New York, United States.

Since 1968 till 1997 Burt worked as an art critic, consultant and writer at Art New England Magazine. In summer 1969 Chernow was a consultant and writer of Model Cities Program in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States. From 1970 to 1971 he was a consultant at ABCD Cultural Arts Center. Beginning from 1970 till 1979 Chernow was a teacher at Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut, United States. It is important to note that from 1972 till 1973 and from 1978 to 1979 he also held the post of an art critic at Fairpress.

From 1985 till 1997 Burt Chernow was a director emeritus and founder at Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States. Also, From 1985 to 1997 Burt was a professor emeritus at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, Connecticut, United States. Chemow authored many exhibition catalogs, as well as articles for art journals, including Craft Horizons, Art News, and Art New England. His artwork was seen in private collections and was on display at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair. On June 9, 1997 he died of a heart attack.

On January 1, 1957 he married Tamara Sackman. In July, 1970 they divorced. They had three children - Perrin, Paul, Paige. On December 12, 1970 Burt got married with Ann Levy.
