Elected city attorney, Indianapolis, 1859. Served as captain 132d Indiana Vols. Detailed for duty on staff of Major General Milroy, 1864.

City attorney, 1865, 1867, 1869. Judge Criminal Circuit Court, 1870. City solicitor, 1872.

City attorney, 1873; elected judge Superior Court of Indiana, 1876. Judge Supreme Court, 1881-1893.
