Calvin MacCracken was born on November 25, 1919, in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. He was a son of Henry Noble MacCracken and Marjorie Dodd MacCracken.
Calvin MacCracken studied at Princeton University, graduating in 1940. He also attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a degree in mechanical engineering.
After graduation, Calvin MacCracken started to work at General Electric Corporation. There he invented the first combustion chamber and throttled the first jet engine. However, in 1974 he left General Electric Corporation and found Jet Heat Inc. (now known as CALMAC Corp.) and worked there as a chief executive officer. He invented over 250 products and had 80 patents. He invented the IceMat ice rink, SunMat roll-out solar collectors, comfort controls for space suits used by the Apollo program, the JetHeet furnace and the AquaJet water powered sump pump. In 1955, MacCracken attended the first Solar Energy Convention in Arizona. In 1983, he published his book, A Handbook for Inventors: How to Protect, Patent, Finance, Develop, Manufacture, and Market Your Ideas. He died of pneumonia on November 10, 1999, in New Hampshire.
Calvin MacCracken was an American inventor, who is famous for his work in energy storage and ice rinks. He was inducted into the New Jersey Inventors Hall of Fame. In 2016, he was inducted into the ASHRAE Hall of Fame, for his contributions to the growth of ASHRAE. He also received the Frank J. Zamboni Award, for his contributions to ice sports.
