BANANA, Canaan was born on March 5, 1936 in Esiphezini, Essexvale District. Son of Aaron Banana and Zibiya Banana.

Trained as school teacher, Tegwani Training Institute, 1958. Student of theology, Epworth Theological College, Zimbabwe, 1962. Diploma, Kasai Industrial Center, Japan, 1970.

M.T.S., Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, 1975. Bachelor (honours) in Theology, University South Africa, 1980. Doctor of Laws (honorary), American University, Washington, 1981.

Career

Chairman Bulawayo Council of Churches 1969-1970, Southern Africa Urban Industrial Mission 1970-1973. Founder; President African National Council (ANC) 1971-1973. ANC representative in United States of America and United Nations 1973-1975.

Chaplain American University 1974-1975. Detained 1975-1976; Press Spokesman for ANC 1976. Attended Geneva Conference on Rhodesia since 1976.

Founder; President Republic of Zimbabwe 1980-1987. F. Mushandira Pamure Project 1980. F. Kushinga-Phikelela Agriculture Institute 1981.
