(Excerpt from Is Appendicitis a Surgical Disease? Whether...)
Excerpt from Is Appendicitis a Surgical Disease? Whether each of these bacterial species alone will originate appendicitis, or whether two or more associ ated species together are required, has as yet not been practically demonstrated. Theoretically, there seems to be no reason why each pathogenic species alone could not produce the infection. It is a well-known fact that the virulence of the Bacterium coli commune sometimes may become enormous. According to Lesage and Ma caigne (archives de med. Experiment. Et d'anatom. Pathol., it produces but insignificant effects if grown on a healthy surface, but causes the most intense reaction when isolated from tissues which have under gone pathological changes. Thus its virulence is the higher as the disease is graver in which this bacterium is found. The fact that cultures taken from a case of cholera showed a high virulence, while those taken from a pus focus were weak, is in entire accord with this theory. It will be reserved for the cooperation of sur geons possessing bacteriological knowledge to appreciate these different theories so far that practical results can be deduced from them. (Excerpt from Surgical Diseases of the Chest The wonderf...)
Excerpt from Surgical Diseases of the Chest The wonderful progress of modern surgery has given an impetus to a production of special literature unheard of in the history of surgery, every organ of the abdominal cavity being the subject of at least one large and excellent treatise. It seems that the especially technical achievements of American surgeons, whose brilliancy has become most striking in ab dominal surgery, absorbed all interest and concentrated it upon the abdominal cavity. This may account for the fact that other cavities of the human body, especially the thoracic, are in spite of their immense importance treated as a quantité négligeable. Nothing illustrates this state better than the fact that up to the present there is only one special work on the surgery of the chest. It is from the illustrious pen of Stephen Paget, who must properly be considered one of the pioneers in this great field of practice. But since the publication of his book, which bears the date of June, 1896, three great factors have arisen which transformed the character of surgical work to such an extent that many traditions and theories had to be discarded. These three revolutionists, which led to surgical possibilities hitherto not dreamed of, were: Bacteriology, Asepsis, and the Rontgen Method. I have endeavored to emphasize the great importance of these new branches of science without ignoring the notable researches and the valuable experiences of our ancestors. At the same time I have taken pains to make the book especially useful for the general practitioner by accentuating the border line character of the work. Consequently more stress is laid upon diagnostic points than is generally expected from a book of a distinctly surgical character. Carl Beck was born on April 4, 1856, at Neckargemünd, near Heidelberg, Germany, the son of Wilhelm and Sophia (Hoehler) Beck. He was a grandson of Carl Hoehler, a surgeon in the army of Napoleon I.
Carl Beck was educated at the home of his grand-uncle, August Hoehler, a Lutheran minister of Freiburg, and at the universities of Heidelberg, Berlin, and Jena, obtaining the degree of M. D. at the latter university in 1879.
Carl came to America in 1881 and settled in New York where he soon attracted attention as a bold and skilful surgeon. He was appointed professor of surgery at the New York Postgraduate School and was president of St. Mark's Hospital for twenty-five years. He devised a new method for extensive excision of ribs, a method of operating in hypospadias, and a new suture in harelip operations. When Roentgen, in 1895, discovered the X-ray, Beck was one of the first to study its application to medicine and surgery and to develop its diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities.
Beck was a very active man and a prolific writer. Among his medical works may be mentioned: Fractures, with an Appendix on the Practical Use of the Roentgen Ray (1899); Principles of Surgical Pathology (1905); Surgical Diseases of the Chest (1907); Roentgen Ray Diagnosis and Therapy (1909). He was also a frequent contributor to American and German medical journals. Being a man of an idealistic turn of mind, he did not lose himself in his professional work, but amid the cares of his professional life found time to devote himself also to literature. In his Heidelberg und Studententhum he described the gay and carefree life of his student days, while in his novel Der Schwabenkonrad he related the adventures of one of his forebears in the Thirty Years' War. During the last years of his life the heavy work began to tell on him. He died in Pelham, near New York.
