Early work was in econometrics. Dissertation was a test of the forecasts made by Klein’s Model III (published in National Bureau of Economie Research, New York, New York, United States of America volume, Conference on Business Cycles, 1951). Prepared a textbook in econometrics.
Have maintained an interest in the testing of econometric models by examining their forecasting performance. Recent work has been in macroeconomics, especially the interaction of monetary and fiscal policy through the govenment budget restraint. This restraint requires that the central government’s expenditure must be financed by some combination of taxing, borrowing from owners of existing money, borrowing from the central bank (i.e. printing new money), and depleting stocks of assets (gold, foreign exchange, etc).
It means that a government cannot choose all the macroeconomic policy variables freely. They must satisfy the government budget restraint. Policy multipliers that take this into account differ from those that ignore it.
Such considerations are relevant to open-economy macroeconomic models as well as to closed-economy models. One of the most satisfying aspects of academic economics is the excellent students I have taught at Chicago and at Johns Hopkins, many of whom are already listed in this directory, and many more of whom surely will be.
