Mitcham is Emeritus Professor of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at the Colorado School of Mines. Teaching appointments include Berea College (Kentucky), St. Catherine College (Kentucky), Brooklyn Polytechnic University, and Pennsylvania State University.
Mitcham was a selective political objector to the Vietnam War. Although he refused military induction he is not a pacifist.
Member of the Society for History of Technology (Abbot Payson Usher prize 1974), American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society for Philosophy and Technology.
