This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1862 edition.

He was born at Hohenheim in Württemberg, on December 19, 1831.
After studying mineralogy and geology at Stuttgart, he entered the university of Tubingen, where he graduated Ph. D. in 1853.
At the university of Tubingen he came under the influence of Quenstedt and devoted his special attention to the fossils of the Jurassic system. With this object he examined in detail during 1854 and the following year the succession of strata in England, France and Germany and determined the various palaeontological stages or zones characterized by special guide-fossils, in most cases ammonites.
The results of his researches were published in his great work Die Juraformation Englands, Frankreichs und des siidwestlichen Deutschlands (1856 - 1858).
In 1858 he became an assistant in the Palaeontological Museum at Munich. In 1860 he became professor of palaeontology in the university at Munich, and in 1861 director of the Palaeontological Collection.
There he continued his labours on the Jurassic fauna, describing new species of Crustacea, ammonites, &c. To him also we owethe establishment of the Tithonian stage, for strata (mainly equivalent to the English Portland and Purbeck Beds) that occur on the borders of Jurassic and Cretaceous.
Of his later works the most important was Paldontologische Mittheilungen aus dem Museum des Konigl.
He died at Munich on the 23rd of December 1865.
In 1861 Oppel became a professor at Munich and a director of the Palaeontological Collection. In studying the Swabian Jura he discovered that paleontologic and lithologic zones need not be identical or even mutually dependent. His use of ammonite fossils in dating Jurassic rocks (that is, those created between about 200 million and 146 million years ago) was adopted by other scientists. He was awarded the Chair of Paleontology at the University of Munich.
