He specialized in foreign books He moved to the U. States around 1864. Shortly thereafter he worked for Boston publishers DeVries, Ibarra & Company, and took over the business in 1870.
His business ventures included Schoenhof & Moeller (c 1870–1878, with Fanny Moeller), Cupples & Schoenhof (c 1891), and Schoenhof Book Company
(ca1890s). Henry James approved of Schoenhof & Moeller, describing it in 1878 as "a vastly better shop than any of the kind in London." Around 1889, "Mr. Schoenhof the general agent for the United States for Hachette & Company"s (London and Paris) publications for the study of foreign languages.. for Henry Holt & Company"s (New York) publications.
