Carl Clinton Van Doren was born on September 10, 1885, in Hope, Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. He was a son of Charles Lucius Van Doren, a country physician, and Dora Anne (Butz) Van Doren.
In 1907 Carl Clinton Van Doren received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois. In 1911 he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Columbia University and a Doctor of Letters in 1940. In 1940 Van Doren gained a Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Pennsylvania.
From 1907 to 1908 Carl Clinton Van Doren was an assistant in rhetoric at the University of Illinois. From 1911 to 1914 he was an English instructor at Columbia University, an assistant professor from 1914 to 1916, and an associate professor in English from 1916 to 1930. Van Doren was a headmaster of Brearly School from 1916 to 1919.
During the years 1920 to 1930 Van Doren co-founded the Literary Guild. From 1919 to 1922 he served as a literary editor of The Nation. From 1922 to 1925 he was an editor of Century Magazine. He created a column titled "The Roving Critic" in one of them. In 1924, however, he announced his intention to focus his literary career on fiction writing. From 1926 to 1934 Van Doren was an editor of Literary Guild, editor. In the beginning of 1946, Carl became an editor of Living Library. Carl Clinton Van Doren died of a heart attack on July 18, 1950, in Torrington, Connecticut.
