He studied under Battista Cairo and Francesco Albani.
His paintings display his overwhelming admiration for Correggio, as may be seen in the fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin, in the cathedral at Forlì. Among his other works are Adam and Eve at The Hague, and two versions of Joseph and Potiphar's Wife at Dresden and at Copenhagen. Cignani died at Forlì on September 8, 1719.
