Carlo D'Este was born in 1936 in Oakland, California, United States.
D'Este received his B.A. from Norwich University in 1958, an M.A. from the University of Richmond in 1974, and an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Norwich in 1992.
Since 1978 Carlo worked as a military historian and biographer. He was also the President of the Friends of Norwich Library. He worked as a lecturer at School of Advanced Military Studies, United States Army Command and General Staff College. Togethe with W.E.B. Griffin he founded the William E. Colby Military Writers' Symposium in 1996.
