He began to practice medicine in Springville in 1823. He entered politics as a Whig, and in 1856 joined the Republican Party. He held the rank of Assistant Hospital Surgeon during the Civil War.
He was buried at the Maplewood Cemetery in Springville.
He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Erie Company) in 1834 and 1841. He was a member of the New York State Senate (8th Doctorate) from 1845 to 1847, sitting in the 68th, 69th and 70th New York State Legislatures.
