Career
Joined the forces of Antonio Maceo in the Revolution of 1895, rising to the rank of colonel. Under the Republic has held numerous political and administrative positions: Representative to the National Legislature, 1901-1923. Unsuccessful candidate of the Liberal Party for the Vice-Presidency of Cuba, 1916.

During the Presidency of Machado suffered imprisonment and exile. Proclaimed Provisional President of Cuba, January 18, 1934.
