Terry attended Winston-Salem State University where he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the fifth round (104th pick overall) during the 1978 National Basketball Association Draft, but was waived before playing in a game.

Two years later he signed with the Bullets. After his playing career was abruptly done, Terry"s life was never the same. Alcoholism and drugs took over.
In fact, in January 1989, Terry was convicted of cocaine distribution.
Just two months later, at the age of 32, he was killed in a high-speed car crash on the Capital Beltway in Prince George"s County, Maryland. Police said that Terry had been drinking and was speeding.
