One of Latin America’s most influential social philosophers in the early twentieth century, Vaz Ferreira distinguishes ‘factual’ issues from ‘normative’ issues and develops a moral and social philosophy based on both. For example, in his work on feminism, first published in 1933 but written between 1914 and 1921, Vaz Ferreira analyses ‘factual’ differences between the sexes such as physical strength, the effects of pregnancy and childbirth, and historical achievements of men and women, and then speculates about 'normative' issues such as the political and civil rights of women, the social life of women and the organization of the family within society. Vaz Ferreira’s philosophical method stimulates reflection, well ahead of his time, on topics such as the equitable division of household tasks, divorce, artificial insemination and abortion.
